Here’s a pool from TUAW:

83a908c6ca99bd1ddf042eb0a0a81b38 What will Mac OS X 10.6 be named?

What will OS X 10.6 be named?
Garfield–1350 (8.7%)
Snow Leopard–536 (3.5%)
Lynx–3134 (20.2%)
Lion–2172 (14.0%)
Felix–285 (1.8%)
Cougar–3977 (25.6%)
Civet–97 (0.6%)
Caterpillar–174 (1.1%)
Jagwire–211 (1.4%)
lolcat–2225 (14.3%)
Ocelot–1346 (8.7%)

So it seems Mac OS X 10.6 is coming sooner than expected.
Despite the fact that I love animals, I honestly have no idea what those animals are without looking up wikipedia(I do know one more though, and that is Ligar). Then here’s a new list given by a commenter under that post:

Caracal, Colocolo, Kodkod, Oncilla, Jaguarundi, Margay, Serval, Sabertooth?

Heathcliff, Hobbes, Hello Kitty, Sylvester, Tigger, Top Cat, Azrael, Thundercat (hooooo!), Autocat, Socks, Stimpy (you eediot!), Figaro, Snagglepuss, Chairman Meow

I would vote for Hello Kitty. And that’s because that’s the only animal I’m familiar with in this list..

Ok seriously I think Lynx would be the next one. Back to July 2003 Apple has trademarked “Lynx”, “Cougar”, “Leopard” and “Tiger”. Now Tiger and Leopard are already out, so expect “Lynx” or “Cougar” to be released from the cage of Apple in the coming OS X 10.6.
Update: here’s an interesting article on the uncanny naming resemblance between WWII German tanks and Mac OS X. Here’s a portion of it:

But why does Mac OS X and german tank models share the same naming convention and other similarities? Could it be something having to do with the shared, well deserved, feeling of beeing the best in engineering on the respective fields? Maybe the tendency of both parties to respond well to strong leadership? The desire for total control over the different territories and the need to enforce this with great tanks, well organized armies, DRM and operating systems locked to run on specific hardware? I am not really sure, and there may be no connection at all. But like the naming of the Grundig stereo amplifiers V1, V2 and V3 compares easilly to the WWII rockets V1 and V2, the OSX and tank names may of course just be twisted coincidences

Update 2: Engadget is reporting the new major release of Mac OS X is to be “Snow Leopard”:

sources have told both Ars Technica and our friends at TUAW that Steve will also use his keynote to introduce the next major version of OS X, codenamed “Snow Leopard.” As the derivative release name indicates, there aren’t many changes in store from 10.5 Leopard — Apple’s said to instead be focusing on tightening up speed and stability as it starts producing more mobile devices. What’s more, this could be the end of PowerPC and Universal support in OS X, as Snow Leopard is said to be Intel-only. That’s bound to ruffle a few feathers, but things could get even more heated if Carbon is deprecated as is also being rumored.
